• This course focuses primarily on dialects, or colloquial Arabic used in everyday conversation. We reference Modern Standard Arabic in a side-by-side comparison with colloquial dialects, so you can understand the relationship between formal and spoken Arabic, but it is not the focus of this course.

  • The course is built around the Core Colloquial Foundations method, a teaching approach developed by Ava to help learners understand spoken Arabic common to most dialects. Words that vary widely across dialects, like the word for “what” are introduced in each dialect. Students learn the core conversational patterns shared across many dialects, while having exposure to the three main widely understood dialects: Egyptian, Levantine, Gulf. Dialect recognition is taught more consistently once foundations of Arabic are built.

  • The course is taught by Ava, a native Arabic speaker from Yemen with extensive experience successfully teaching several Arabic dialects, including Egyptian, Levantine, Gulf, and Yemeni.
